Acworth is a small hilltop town located in Sullivan County, New Hampshire. It was incorporated in 1772. The town is situated 69 miles from Manchester. Originally chartered by Governor Benning Wentworth in 1752, it was called Burnett after William Burnett, a former governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay. In 1754, however the French and Indian War broke out, and no settlments were made under the charter. Wentworth re-granted in 1766, naming it Acworth after Sir Jacob Acworth and English admiral with interests in Portsmouth shipping. The town was permanently settled in in 1768 by several families from Londonderry. According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Acworth was home to 913 residents. This included 318 households and 234 families. Acworth is comprised of 38.9 square miles of land and 0.1 square miles of water. As of the 2010 census, the town had a total populationof 891.
