Sanford is situated on the Mousam River, in York County, Maine.   Located in the Foothills, it is considered to be the geographic center of the New England region.  It is just 12 miles from the coastline and is bordered by Shapleigh, Acton, Alfred, Kennebunk, Wells, North Berwick and Lebanon.  Sanford includes the town of Springvale. 

Sanford was settled in 1739 and incorporated as a town in 1768.  The town was originally named Phillipstown, and was later named Sanford, after Peleg Sanford. 

Sanford is home to the Goodall Park Baseball Stadium and the Sanford Regional Airport.   It is also home to many wooded areas and lakes, drawing many campers to the area.  The town's many parks and playgrounds include Benton Playground, Carpentier Park, the Downtown Center Park, Goodall Park, Gowen Park, and Benton Playground.

According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Sanford’s population was 20,806 – the highest population of the York County towns, and 8th in the state of Maine.   There were 5,449 families, 8,270 households and 8,807 housing units.  The average family size was 3.01 and the average household size was 2.48.

Sanford is comprised of 47.8 square miles of land and 0.9 square miles of water.  It is drained by the Mousam River.
